“… 36th anniversary, the events on and around the central Beijing square on June 4, 1989, when Chinese troops opened fire to end student-led pro-democracy protests, are not publicly discussed in China, which treats the date as taboo and allows no public remembrance.” Reuters
“the problem is a consequence of national policy. Federal laws have created a patchwork of law enforcement jurisdiction on reservations where the lead investigative agency — whether state, tribal or federal law enforcement — is often determined by a variety of factors, including the severity of the crime, whether it occurred on or off tribal land and whether the victim and perpetrator were Native American or not.”
“The United States has a treaty responsibility to fund public safety but tribal leaders and advocates have long said that federal funding doesn’t come close to meeting community needs. Though it’s ultimately up to Congress to increase funding for law enforcement on reservations, state lawmakers nationwide have taken steps to address the issue.”
“isn’t the first city where controversy has surrounded the reopening ,
of a private prison as an Immigration detention facility. “
“The first budget recommendation proposed by the administration of a man found liable for sexual abuse suggests eliminating the team tackling rape prevention and education. It takes a limited view of who is worthy of help to flee abuse. These changes limit how federal funds can be used to support survivors and emphasize criminal consequences for perpetrators over a more holistic view of justice.”
“In 1994, Congress recognized violence against women as a national crisis and passed a law that supercharged the government’s funding and attention to the issue. They haven’t solved the problem — but lawmakers and advocates say the Violence Against Women Act and its predecessor, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act, have been essential to the protection of victims and the decline in violent crime.”

—-——————-“Advocates have told Mississippi Today that it’s difficult to know how many domestic violence deaths and injuries there are in any given year because there isn’t data collected at the state level. An analysis by Mississippi Today found at least 300 people – victims, abusers and collateral victims in the form of children and law enforcement – died from domestic violence between 2020 and 2024.” ( To continue reading )

“Missing from Fire Trail Road,” which examines both one specific case and a longtime pattern of violence against Indigenous women,
disproportionate mysterious disappearances or murders of those women, and a seeming lack of interest by law enforcement to solve those cases.”
“According to the National Crime Information Center, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian or Alaska Native women or girls in 2016, though the U.S. Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database only logged 116 of those cases, according to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Seattle-based Urban Indian Health Institute, in a report released in 2018, identified 506 missing or murdered Indigenous women since 1943 from specifically urban areas across the U.S. (including 45 in Seattle alone), noting that it was extremely difficult to gather such data from the 71 cities, and is likely a significant undercount.”

“Utilizing prevailing research as a component of legal decision-making is a win for logic, reasoning, and science but the dissenting opinion of the decision cannot be ignored. The dissent, penned by Chief Justice Clement, indicated that first degree murder is a grave offense, and, a “…punishment of great severity is therefore proportionate,” while also indicating that the majority decision focuses on examining the offender and not the offense. Therein lies the issue with what we tell ourselves, as a society, about how and why we incarcerate and hints at the reasoning behind the United States leading all developed nations in per capita prison populations.”

It feels important to mention Daniel Sherrer in the loss of a loved one thought of well by many, in that while what people might first think of at least initially ( makes sense ) T hat Domestic Abuse and / or violence primarily impedes on children, intimate partners, family members of all ages depending on the dynamic ; The AP story of out of Ohio linked to above is an additional reminder that an individuals tasked with responding to calls to crisis - that may be occurring as a result of something that has potentially breached hostility in language and behavior to actual violence and is calling for help, need to know the nuanced layers that can be learned more about in the education that has been cultivated regarding how to response and deal with this epidemic. /. Real Men don’t hit women. Ideally we have more and more individuals who are educating themselves on how thoughts relate to behavior, and I’m hopeful we can outpace the machine though it’s a bit much out there.
